Key Account Manager Recruitment Experts | Automotive Aftermarket

Key Account Manager Recruitment

Hiring a Key Account Manager for your automotive aftermarket business is one of the most commercially significant decisions you'll make. The right person protects your most valuable client relationships and drives strategic growth. The wrong hire costs you far more than a salary. Our specialist Key Account Manager recruitment connects you with candidates who genuinely understand the aftermarket.

Specialist recruiters understand the unique demands of Key Account Manager roles in the automotive aftermarket

Effective Key Account Managers are crucial for nurturing strategic client relationships and driving business growth

Partnering with an expert recruitment agency streamlines the hiring process for these critical positions

Look for candidates with strong negotiation skills and a deep understanding of client needs

JSL Services draws on an established network of proven aftermarket sales professionals to reduce your hiring risk

Our automotive and commercial vehicle aftermarket recruitment expertise means we assess candidates against the specific commercial realities your business faces - not generic sales criteria.

Why is Key Account Manager Recruitment Critical for Aftermarket Businesses?

Losing a major account in the automotive aftermarket rarely happens overnight. It happens because no one was managing the relationship with enough depth, consistency, or commercial intelligence. A skilled Key Account Manager prevents that erosion before it starts.

What challenges do automotive aftermarket businesses face in client retention?

Automotive aftermarket businesses face intense pressure from consolidating buying groups, increasing own-label competition, and clients who expect proactive account development rather than reactive service. Retaining major accounts requires a KAM who understands parts distribution cycles, pricing pressures, and the technical expectations of workshop and fleet customers - not just someone who can manage a spreadsheet.

How do Key Account Managers drive strategic growth for your organisation?

A strong KAM grows revenue from existing accounts by identifying unmet needs, cross-selling product ranges, and positioning your business as a preferred supplier. The process is straightforward: deep client knowledge reduces the risk of a competitor gaining a foothold, while structured account planning creates predictable revenue streams that support your wider commercial forecasting.

What is the impact of a strong Key Account Manager on your bottom line?

Retaining a major account is consistently more cost-effective than acquiring a new one. A high-performing KAM who manages five or six strategic accounts can protect a significant proportion of your annual turnover. Our Building a Commercial Team case study illustrates how the right commercial hire directly strengthens business performance and revenue stability.

How Do Specialist Recruiters Identify Top Key Account Manager Talent?

Generic sales recruiters assess generic sales skills. We assess the specific competencies that determine whether a KAM will succeed in the automotive aftermarket - and those are not the same thing.

What specific skills do we assess in Key Account Manager candidates?

We assess candidates against structured competency frameworks covering strategic account planning, negotiation under commercial pressure, and the ability to build relationships at multiple levels within a client organisation. The competency-based interview process we use ensures every candidate is evaluated on demonstrated behaviour, not self-reported capability.

How do we evaluate a candidate's understanding of the automotive aftermarket?

We probe candidates on their practical knowledge of the aftermarket supply chain - from OEM and IAM parts distribution through to workshop buying behaviour and fleet procurement. A candidate who cannot articulate the commercial pressures facing a motor factor or a national fleet operator will struggle to build credibility with your most important accounts.

What is our process for vetting negotiation and relationship management expertise?

Negotiation capability is tested through scenario-based questioning that reflects real aftermarket situations - margin defence, contract renewal under competitive threat, and managing a dissatisfied key account. We look for candidates who demonstrate a structured approach to preparation and a clear understanding of where value is created for both parties, not just those who claim to be "good with people."

What are the Benefits of Partnering with a Key Account Manager Recruitment Agency?

You're busy running a business. A specialist agency removes the time cost of searching, screening, and shortlisting - and significantly reduces the risk of a costly mis-hire at a senior commercial level.

How does a specialist agency save your business time and resources?

We handle the full search process - market mapping, direct approach, initial screening, and competency assessment - before a candidate reaches your desk. This means your management time is spent evaluating a focused shortlist of genuinely qualified individuals, rather than sifting through applications from candidates with no relevant aftermarket experience.

What access do we provide to a wider pool of qualified Key Account Managers?

Many of the strongest KAM candidates in the automotive aftermarket are not actively job-seeking. They're performing well in their current roles and won't respond to a job board advert. Our network within the sales roles in the automotive and commercial vehicle aftermarket gives us direct access to this passive candidate pool.

How do we ensure cultural fit and long-term success for your hires?

We take time to understand your business structure, your client base, and the internal dynamics that determine whether a KAM will thrive. A candidate who excels in a large corporate environment may not suit a privately owned distributor with a flat structure and a hands-on culture. Matching on culture reduces early attrition and protects your investment in the hire.

What Qualifications and Experience Should You Seek in a Key Account Manager?

There is no single qualification that defines a great KAM. What matters is the combination of commercial experience, sector knowledge, and interpersonal capability - and how those elements have been applied in practice.

What educational backgrounds are common for successful Key Account Managers?

Successful Key Account Managers in the automotive aftermarket typically hold a degree in business, marketing, or a related discipline, though sector experience often carries more weight than academic background. The Institute of Sales Management recognises structured sales qualifications as a credible indicator of professional commitment and commercial methodology.

Which industry experience is most valuable for an automotive aftermarket KAM?

Prior experience in parts distribution, workshop supply, or fleet account management is the strongest indicator of readiness. Candidates who have managed accounts within FMCG or broader B2B sales can transition successfully, but they require a longer onboarding period to build the product and channel knowledge your clients will expect from day one.

What soft skills are essential for effective client relationship management?

The ability to listen before proposing, to manage conflict without damaging the relationship, and to present commercial data clearly to non-financial stakeholders are the soft skills that separate average KAMs from exceptional ones. These are assessed through structured conversation, not a CV review - which is precisely why specialist recruitment adds value at this stage.

How We Place Key Account Managers in the Automotive Aftermarket

Our process is structured, transparent, and built around the specific demands of aftermarket commercial roles.

1. Role Definition
We work with you to define the commercial outcomes the role must deliver, the accounts it will manage, and the internal stakeholders the KAM will need to influence. This shapes every subsequent stage of the search.

2. Market Mapping
We identify the relevant candidate pool across the aftermarket - including those not actively seeking a move - and build a targeted longlist based on sector experience, account management track record, and commercial performance.

3. Competency Screening
We conduct structured competency interviews with every candidate before presenting them to you. Each candidate is assessed on negotiation, account planning, and aftermarket sector knowledge.

4. Shortlist Presentation
We present a focused shortlist with detailed candidate profiles, including our assessment notes and a clear rationale for each recommendation. You receive quality, not volume.

5. Offer and Onboarding Support
We support the offer process, including salary benchmarking against current market rates, and remain available through the candidate's first weeks in post to protect the placement.

Looking for Automotive Aftermarket, Talent?

JSL Solutions works with businesses just like yours across the Automotive Aftermarket, sector. Hire a National Sales Manager: Automotive Aftermarket Recruitment Experts

Hire a National Sales Manager

Finding the right National Sales Manager for your aftermarket business is one of the most commercially critical decisions you'll make. Get it wrong and you're looking at missed revenue targets, a demotivated sales team, and months of disruption. Get it right and the impact on your market position is immediate. JSL Services specialises in placing experienced sales leaders across automotive and commercial vehicle aftermarket recruitment, connecting aftermarket businesses with candidates who can hit the ground running.

Recruiting a National Sales Manager requires a deep understanding of aftermarket sales dynamics and genuine sales leadership qualities

Specialist recruitment agencies provide access to a wider pool of qualified candidates and significantly simplify the hiring process

A well-defined role and competitive compensation package are essential for attracting experienced sales leaders

Effective National Sales Managers drive sales strategy, team performance, and market expansion across the UK

Salary benchmarks for this role typically range from £60,000 to £90,000 basic, with performance-related bonuses on top

Why is a Specialist Recruitment Agency Essential for National Sales Manager Hiring?

How do specialist recruiters access a wider talent pool?

Specialist recruiters maintain active relationships with senior sales professionals who are not actively searching job boards. These candidates are performing well in their current roles and will only consider a move when approached directly by someone they trust. Our network across the aftermarket sector means we reach this passive audience, which generalist platforms simply cannot access.

What market insights do expert recruitment agencies provide?

Expert recruitment agencies provide real-time salary data, competitor hiring activity, and candidate availability specific to the aftermarket sector. This intelligence shapes your job brief, your compensation offer, and your interview process. Without it, you risk pitching a role at the wrong level or losing strong candidates to a competitor who moved faster with a better-structured offer.

How do agencies simplify the National Sales Manager hiring process?

Agencies reduce the time between identifying a need and making an appointment by managing sourcing, initial screening, and interview scheduling in parallel. Our case studies demonstrate how this structured approach consistently shortens hiring timelines for commercially critical appointments, without compromising the rigour of the assessment process.

What Key Responsibilities Define a National Sales Manager in the Aftermarket?

What sales strategy development skills are crucial?

The ability to build and execute a national sales strategy - covering pricing, channel management, and territory planning - is non-negotiable. Strong candidates will have a track record of growing revenue in structured aftermarket environments, whether in automotive parts distribution, commercial vehicle components, or related sectors. Strategic thinking must translate directly into measurable sales outcomes, not just planning documents.

How do National Sales Managers manage and motivate sales teams?

Effective sales team management in the aftermarket requires a combination of clear performance frameworks and genuine people skills. The best National Sales Managers set individual targets, run structured one-to-ones, and create an environment where field sales representatives feel supported rather than monitored. Our Building a Commercial Team case study illustrates how the right sales leader transforms team performance following a period of leadership change.

What role do they play in market analysis and expansion?

National Sales Managers identify white space in the market - underserved geographies, untapped customer segments, or product categories with growth potential. In the aftermarket, this often means analysing data from regions including Greater Manchester, Birmingham, and Belfast to identify where sales resource should be deployed or redistributed. This analytical function is what separates a sales manager from a true sales leader.

How to Attract and Retain Top National Sales Manager Talent?

Attracting a high-calibre National Sales Manager requires more than a competitive salary. Experienced candidates at this level evaluate the quality of the business, the clarity of the commercial strategy, and the realistic opportunity to make an impact. Your offer needs to address all three.

What compensation and benefits packages are competitive?

In the UK aftermarket sector, National Sales Manager salaries typically range from £60,000 to £90,000 basic, with the midpoint sitting around £70,000 to £80,000 for roles carrying full national responsibility. Performance-related bonuses, a company vehicle or car allowance, and private healthcare are standard expectations at this level. Pitching below market rate will cost you the strongest candidates before the process has properly begun.

How important is company culture in attracting sales leaders?

Experienced sales leaders choose employers as carefully as employers choose them. A business that can articulate its values, its growth ambitions, and how the National Sales Manager role connects to the board-level strategy will consistently attract stronger candidates. Vague job briefs and unclear reporting lines are the fastest way to lose a strong candidate to a competitor with a clearer proposition.

What career progression opportunities should be highlighted?

Candidates at National Sales Manager level are often considering a path towards Sales Director or VP of Sales. Highlighting a genuine progression route - whether that means a seat at the leadership table or involvement in strategic decisions - makes your opportunity significantly more compelling. Our Appointing a Managing Director to Enable Business Exit case study shows how clearly defined progression shapes the quality of candidates who engage with a search.

What is the Recruitment Process for a National Sales Manager?

Our recruitment process for National Sales Manager appointments is structured, transparent, and built around the specific commercial context of your aftermarket business. We do not send CVs speculatively. Every candidate we present has been assessed against your brief.

How do we define the ideal candidate profile?

We begin every search with a detailed briefing conversation. We map the scope of the role, the size and structure of the sales team, the key accounts involved, and the commercial targets the incoming National Sales Manager will be expected to hit. This profile becomes the filter for every candidate we assess - ensuring the shortlist reflects your actual requirements, not a generic sales leadership template.

What is our candidate sourcing and screening methodology?

We source candidates through our established aftermarket network, direct headhunting, and targeted outreach to professionals in relevant sales roles in automotive and commercial vehicle aftermarket. Every candidate completes a structured competency-based assessment before we present their CV to you. We verify track record, leadership experience, and sector knowledge at this stage - not yours.

How do we facilitate interviews and offer management?

We manage interview scheduling, provide structured briefing notes for both parties, and gather feedback promptly after each stage. When an offer is ready, we manage the negotiation process to protect the relationship on both sides. Our involvement at the offer stage significantly reduces the risk of a candidate declining or counter-offering without warning.

Ready to Hire a National Sales Manager for Your Aftermarket Business?

JSL Services has placed National Sales Managers with aftermarket manufacturers, distributors, and service providers across the UK. Hire an Area Sales Manager | Automotive Aftermarket Recruitment

Hire an Area Sales Manager

Finding an Area Sales Manager who genuinely knows your territory, your customers, and your market is harder than most hiring managers expect. In the automotive and commercial vehicle aftermarket, the wrong appointment doesn't just miss targets - it hands ground to competitors. Our specialist recruiters connect you with sales leaders who deliver from day one.

Specialist recruiters understand the unique demands of the automotive and commercial vehicle aftermarket

Effective Area Sales Managers possess strong regional networks and a proven track record of territory growth

Partnering with an expert agency streamlines the hiring process and secures high-calibre sales leadership

Consider candidates' ability to develop and execute localised sales strategies within defined regions

Salary packages for experienced Area Sales Managers in the UK automotive aftermarket typically range from £40,000 to £55,000 basic salary, plus quarterly or annual bonus, company car or car allowance, pension and additional benefits. Exact packages depend on territory size, product complexity and the level of responsibility.

Why Partner with Specialist Automotive Aftermarket Area Sales Manager Recruiters?

Generalist job boards like Indeed and Totaljobs generate volume. They rarely generate the right candidate for a commercially critical aftermarket sales role. Our Automotive & Commercial Vehicle Aftermarket recruitment practice is built specifically for businesses like yours - manufacturers, distributors, and service providers who need sales leaders with genuine sector credibility.

What specific challenges do automotive aftermarket businesses face when hiring sales managers?

The automotive aftermarket demands sales managers who understand distributor networks, pricing strategies, and the commercial pressures facing workshops and fleets. Generic candidates lack this context. Businesses consistently report that candidates sourced through non-specialist channels struggle to build credibility with experienced aftermarket buyers, which slows territory growth and damages existing client relationships.

How do specialist recruiters identify candidates with strong regional client relationships?

Specialist recruiters map the market before a vacancy is advertised. We identify active candidates and those not looking, cross-referencing regional coverage - whether that's the North West, Yorkshire, East Midlands, or Hampshire - against existing account portfolios. This means we present candidates whose relationships with key accounts are already established and verifiable.

What is the benefit of an agency understanding territory growth strategies?

An agency that understands territory growth can assess whether a candidate's track record is genuinely transferable to your patch. We evaluate KPI performance, new business contract wins, and revenue trajectory - not just job titles. This prevents the common mistake of hiring a strong account manager when you actually need someone who can open new business in an underdeveloped region.

Identifying Key Qualities in an Automotive Aftermarket Area Sales Manager

The best Area Sales Managers in the commercial vehicle aftermarket combine commercial sharpness with deep product knowledge and the kind of regional credibility that takes years to build. Our Building a Commercial Team case study illustrates how structured search and market insight produce appointments that genuinely strengthen a business.

What experience should an Area Sales Manager have in the commercial vehicle sector?

Proven experience managing a defined territory within the commercial vehicle aftermarket - covering parts distribution, workshop networks, or fleet supply - is the baseline. Candidates should demonstrate familiarity with CRM systems, pricing strategies, and the buying behaviour of fleet operators and independent workshops across regions such as the North East, Manchester, or London.

How important are existing client relationships for new Area Sales Managers?

Existing regional client relationships accelerate revenue from the moment a new Area Sales Manager starts. A candidate who already holds trusted relationships with key accounts in your territory removes months of relationship-building time. This is particularly valuable in the commercial vehicle sector, where buyer loyalty is hard-won and distributor networks are tightly interconnected.

What metrics demonstrate a candidate's ability to drive territory growth?

Quantifiable evidence of territory growth includes year-on-year revenue increases within a defined patch, new business contracts secured, and improvements in account penetration and profitability. Strong candidates can articulate the specific sales strategy they applied, the CRM data that supported their decisions, and the KPIs they were held against - not just the headline number.

Our Recruitment Process for Automotive Aftermarket Area Sales Managers

We don't post and pray. Our process is structured, market-led, and built around your specific commercial requirements. You can see how this approach works across different hiring challenges in our case studies, each reflecting the same principle: structured search, market insight, and outcomes that strengthen the business.

How does JSL Solutions source qualified Area Sales Manager candidates?

We conduct direct market mapping across the automotive and commercial vehicle aftermarket, identifying both active and passive candidates by territory, sector specialism, and career trajectory. Our network spans manufacturers, distributors, and service providers across the United Kingdom, giving us access to sales professionals who are not visible on generalist job boards.

What screening methods do we use to assess sales leadership potential?

Every candidate goes through a structured competency-based assessment before reaching your shortlist. We evaluate territory management capability, CRM proficiency, new business development track record, and the ability to execute localised sales strategies. Our approach to competency-based interviews ensures we assess behaviours and outcomes, not just experience on paper.

How do we ensure cultural fit within your automotive aftermarket business?

We invest time understanding your business before we source. That means your sales culture, your management style, your growth ambitions, and the specific dynamics of your territory. We then assess candidates against those criteria directly, so the shortlist we present reflects both commercial capability and the working style your team needs to perform at its best.

How We Evaluate Area Sales Manager Candidates

1. Role Definition We work with you to define the precise territory scope, revenue targets, and sector focus - whether that's parts distribution, commercial vehicle aftermarket, or a cross-sector patch covering regions like Yorkshire or the North West.

2. Business Development Manager Recruitment | Automotive Aftermarket Specialists

Business Development Manager Recruitment

Finding a Business Development Manager who genuinely opens doors in the automotive aftermarket is harder than most hiring managers expect. The role demands sector fluency, existing relationships, and the commercial instinct to convert market opportunity into revenue. We place BDMs who deliver all three.

Our automotive and commercial vehicle aftermarket recruitment practice is built specifically for manufacturers, distributors, and service providers who need commercial hires that hit the ground running.

We recruit BDMs with proven aftermarket sector knowledge - not generalist sales candidates

Our search covers passive candidates who aren't responding to job boards

We assess partnership-building capability and market entry experience, not just sales figures

Every shortlist is built around your specific growth objectives and territory requirements

We've placed commercial teams across the UK, supporting businesses from start-up growth phases to post-acquisition expansion

Why Business Development Manager Recruitment in the Aftermarket Is Different

Aftermarket BDM recruitment sits in a narrow talent pool. The candidates who perform in this sector combine technical product awareness with the ability to build distributor networks, negotiate fleet agreements, and identify white-space opportunities in competitive markets. Generic sales recruitment processes miss this entirely.

What makes a high-performing BDM in the automotive aftermarket?

High-performing BDMs in the automotive aftermarket combine distributor relationship management with the commercial judgement to prioritise accounts by margin potential, not just volume. They understand parts supply chains, warranty structures, and the buying cycles of independent garages, fleet operators, and national accounts - knowledge that takes years to build and can't be screened from a CV alone.

What salary should you budget for a BDM in the aftermarket?

Business Development Manager salaries within the UK automotive aftermarket typically range from £40,000 to £60,000 basic salary, depending on territory size, product complexity and the seniority of the role. Total packages commonly increase to £55,000-£80,000 through bonus or commission, together with a company car or allowance and additional benefits. Roles covering London and the South East may attract higher packages due to market demand and account density.

Why do BDM searches fail when handled by generalist agencies?

Whilst many generalist recruitment agencies rely heavily on job advertising, the strongest Business Development Managers in the automotive aftermarket are typically already employed and delivering results. Successfully engaging these individuals requires direct market mapping, established sector relationships and credible conversations about long-term career opportunities rather than simply advertising a vacancy.

The BDM Skills That Drive Aftermarket Revenue Growth

Not every strong salesperson is a strong BDM. The distinction matters when you're hiring for market entry or partnership development. A BDM's primary output is new revenue streams - through new accounts, new channels, or new geographies. That requires a different profile from an account manager focused on retention.

Our building a commercial team case study illustrates how we structured a BDM search following a leadership change, mapping the market to identify candidates with both the sector relationships and the entrepreneurial mindset the business needed.

How do you write a BDM job description that attracts the right candidates?

Effective BDM job descriptions define the specific growth objective - new channel development, geographic expansion, or OEM partnership acquisition - rather than listing generic sales duties. Candidates with genuine aftermarket experience self-select based on the challenge, not the job title. Vague descriptions attract volume; precise descriptions attract the right people.

How We Run Business Development Manager Searches

Our process is structured around your commercial outcome, not a candidate database. We don't match CVs. We identify the individuals in the market who have done what you need done - and we make the case for your opportunity directly.

1. Commercial Brief We work with your leadership team to define the growth objective, territory, account targets, and the specific relationships or sector experience that will accelerate results. This shapes every element of the search.

2. Market Mapping We identify the active BDM population in your sector - by employer, geography, and specialism. This includes candidates at competitors, adjacent suppliers, and distribution businesses who may not be visible through conventional channels.

3. Direct Candidate Engagement We approach candidates directly, presenting your opportunity with full commercial context. Our sector credibility means candidates engage with us where they wouldn't respond to a cold approach from an unknown recruiter.

4. Competency Assessment We assess each candidate against your specific brief - evaluating partnership-building track record, market entry experience, and commercial judgement. Our case studies reflect how this structured approach delivers commercially critical appointments.

5. Shortlist Presentation We present a focused shortlist with full candidate context - not a stack of CVs. You receive our assessment of each individual's fit against your growth objectives, so your interview time is spent on genuine contenders.

BDM Recruitment Across the Aftermarket Sector

We recruit Business Development Managers for businesses operating across the full aftermarket spectrum. Our sales roles in the automotive and commercial vehicle aftermarket practice covers parts manufacturers, factor groups, independent distributors, and service providers across the UK - from London and the South East through to the Midlands, North West, and beyond.

We also support businesses in the commercial vehicle aftermarket where BDM requirements often centre on fleet operator relationships and national account development.

What career progression does a BDM role offer in the aftermarket?

BDMs in the aftermarket typically progress to National Sales Manager, Head of Commercial, or Sales Director within five to eight years, depending on business size and growth trajectory. The route accelerates significantly when the individual has built a demonstrable new business track record - making the quality of the initial hire critical to your long-term commercial leadership pipeline.

Hiring Business Development Managers?

JSL Solutions connects you with experienced business development managers. Passive candidate searches take longer than active-market searches because direct engagement and relationship-building are required. Roles with highly specific sector or geographic requirements sit at the longer end of that range.

Should we use a specialist recruiter or a generalist agency for a BDM hire?

Specialist recruiters consistently outperform generalist agencies for aftermarket BDM roles because the candidate pool is narrow and relationship-driven. Generalist agencies rely on active job seekers. Specialist recruiters access the employed, high-performing candidates who aren't browsing Totaljobs - and who are more likely to stay once placed.

What information do you need from us to start a BDM search?

We need a clear picture of your growth objective, the territory or accounts in scope, the product or service the BDM will represent, and your compensation structure. A detailed brief produces a focused shortlist. The more precisely you define the commercial outcome you need, the faster and more accurately we can identify the right candidates.

Can you recruit BDMs with specific distributor network experience?

Yes. Distributor network development is one of the most common BDM briefs we handle in the aftermarket. We map candidates by their specific channel experience - whether that's factor groups, independent garages, fleet operators, or OEM supply chains - and assess their existing relationships as part of the search process.

What's the difference between a BDM and a Sales Manager in the aftermarket?

A BDM's primary focus is new revenue generation - opening accounts, entering markets, and building partnerships that don't yet exist. A Sales Manager typically manages existing revenue and a sales team. Many aftermarket businesses need both, but conflating the two roles in a single job description consistently attracts the wrong candidates and produces poor hiring outcomes.

Ready to Find Your Next Business Development Manager?

If you're looking to expand your market reach, enter a new channel, or build a new business function in the aftermarket, the quality of your BDM hire will define how quickly that happens. We work with a small number of partners at any one time, which means your search gets genuine focus - not a slot in a queue.

Speak to us about your requirement, or explore our full automotive and commercial vehicle aftermarket recruitment expertise to understand how we approach commercially critical appointments across the sector.

Hire a Regional Sales Manager | Automotive Aftermarket Recruitment

Hire a Regional Sales Manager

Hiring the right Regional Sales Manager can determine whether a territory grows or stands still. The strongest candidates rarely apply for adverts because they're already delivering results for competitors, managing established customer relationships and consistently exceeding commercial targets.

JSL Solutions specialises in recruiting Regional Sales Managers for manufacturers, distributors and suppliers across the automotive and commercial vehicle aftermarket. Unlike generalist recruitment agencies, our consultants have held senior commercial positions within the aftermarket themselves, giving us a genuine understanding of distributor networks, buying groups, workshops, national accounts and the challenges faced by commercial sales teams.

Every search is tailored around your territory, customer base, product range and commercial objectives, helping you secure candidates capable of making an immediate impact.

Why businesses choose JSL Solutions

Specialists in Automotive & Commercial Vehicle Aftermarket recruitment

Over 60 years' combined aftermarket industry and recruitment experience

Access to passive candidates unavailable through traditional job advertising

Proven expertise recruiting Regional Sales Managers throughout the UK

Structured executive search process focused on long-term commercial success

Why Regional Sales Manager Recruitment is Difficult

Most experienced Regional Sales Managers aren't actively looking for a new role.

They're already delivering results for manufacturers, distributors or suppliers, managing profitable territories and maintaining strong relationships with customers built over many years.

Waiting for applications through a job advert often means missing the candidates capable of delivering the greatest commercial impact.

Successful recruitment requires detailed market mapping, direct candidate engagement and genuine aftermarket knowledge. Understanding which competitors employ the strongest people, which territories they manage and how they've delivered growth allows us to identify candidates that many businesses simply wouldn't reach themselves.

That specialist knowledge is what separates JSL Solutions from a generalist recruitment agency.

What Does a Regional Sales Manager Do?

A Regional Sales Manager is responsible for driving revenue growth across a defined geographical territory while leading and developing a field sales team.

Typical responsibilities and major accounts

Identifying new business opportunities

Developing existing customer accounts

Producing accurate sales forecasts

Managing budgets and regional profitability

Working closely with product management and marketing teams

Reporting commercial performance to senior leadership

In many aftermarket businesses, Regional Sales Managers also play an important role in supporting pricing strategy, managing customer expectations, resolving commercial issues and protecting long-term customer relationships.

Ultimately, they are responsible for delivering sustainable commercial growth rather than simply managing sales activity.

What We Look for When Recruiting Regional Sales Managers

Experience has shown us that successful Regional Sales Managers aren't necessarily those who have managed the largest teams.

The strongest candidates consistently demonstrate:

Sustainable territory growth over several years

Strong distributor and buying group relationships

Experience developing underperforming territories

The ability to coach and develop field sales teams

Commercial awareness around profitability, pricing and margin

Credibility with workshops, distributors and key accounts

Accurate forecasting and pipeline management

Long-term career stability

Excellent communication and leadership skills

Whilst technical product knowledge can often be developed, commercial credibility and relationship-building ability are significantly harder to teach.

That's why our assessment process focuses heavily on behavioural evidence and previous achievements rather than simply reviewing CVs.

Regional Sales Manager Salary Guide

Typical salaries within the UK automotive and commercial vehicle aftermarket currently range between:

£48,000–£55,000 for developing territories

£55,000–£65,000 for experienced Regional Sales Managers

£65,000+ for highly specialised sectors or larger national territories

Most remuneration packages also include:

Annual performance bonus

Company car or car allowance

Pension

Private healthcare

Life assurance

Laptop and mobile phone

Salary expectations will vary depending on territory size, product complexity, management responsibility and the commercial expectations of the role.

Why Use a Specialist Recruitment Agency?

The strongest Regional Sales Managers rarely spend time searching job boards.

They're typically performing well, earning good bonuses and being approached discreetly by competitors.

Our recruitment process begins with detailed market mapping to identify where the strongest Regional Sales Managers are currently working.

Because our consultants have extensive experience within the automotive aftermarket, we already understand many of the businesses, territories and customer networks involved.

That allows us to have informed commercial conversations with candidates rather than simply sending generic recruitment messages.

The result is a significantly stronger shortlist made up of candidates who genuinely fit your business rather than those who happened to submit an application.

First-Hand Aftermarket Knowledge Makes the Difference

Our background within the automotive aftermarket allows experience enables us to identify candidates with the right technical knowledge, commercial capability and leadership style to succeed within your organisation.

Our Recruitment Hire a Sales Director | Automotive Aftermarket Recruitment

Hire a Sales Director

Hiring the right Sales Director can transform the commercial performance of your business. The wrong appointment can damage customer relationships, unsettle sales teams and slow growth at exactly the wrong time.

The strongest Sales Directors are rarely active on job boards. They are already leading teams, managing strategic accounts and delivering revenue growth for competitors.

JSL Solutions specialises in recruiting Sales Directors for manufacturers, distributors and suppliers across the automotive, commercial vehicle and industrial aftermarket. Unlike generalist recruitment agencies, our consultants have held senior commercial positions within the aftermarket themselves, giving us a practical understanding of sales leadership, distributor networks, buying groups, workshops, national accounts and commercial growth strategy.

Every search is built around your business objectives, customer base, product range, leadership structure and long-term growth plans.

Why businesses choose JSL Solutions

Specialists in Automotive, Commercial Vehicle and Industrial Aftermarket recruitment

Over 60 years' combined aftermarket industry and recruitment experience

Access to senior passive candidates unavailable through job boards

Proven expertise recruiting senior commercial leaders across the UK

Structured executive search process focused on long-term business performance

Why Sales Director Recruitment is Difficult

Most successful Sales Directors are not actively looking for a new role.

They are already employed, delivering results, earning strong bonuses and managing important customer relationships.

At this level, a job advert alone rarely reaches the people capable of making the biggest impact.

Hiring a Sales Director requires a targeted search process, market insight and the ability to approach senior candidates discreetly and professionally.

It also requires a clear understanding of the commercial environment they will be stepping into. Sales strategy, team structure, customer concentration, margin pressure, product complexity and leadership culture all influence whether a Sales Director will succeed.

That is why specialist knowledge matters.

What Does a Sales Director Do?

A Sales Director is responsible for leading the commercial sales function and delivering sustainable revenue growth.

Typical responsibilities include:

Developing and implementing sales strategy

Leading regional, national or international sales teams

Managing key customer relationships

Driving new business growth

Developing existing accounts

Improving sales performance and accountability

Managing budgets, forecasts and revenue targets

Supporting pricing, margin and profitability decisions

Working closely with marketing, product, operations and finance teams

Reporting commercial performance to the board or senior leadership team

In the aftermarket, a Sales Director often plays a central role in managing distributor relationships, national accounts, buying groups and major trade customers.

They need to balance strategic leadership with hands-on commercial credibility.

What We Look for When Recruiting Sales Directors

Experience has shown us that the best Sales Directors are not always the candidates with the biggest job titles.

The strongest candidates consistently demonstrate:

Proven sales growth over several years

Strong leadership of regional or national sales teams

Credibility with distributors, buying groups and major accounts

Ability to develop sales strategy and execute it effectively

Commercial awareness around pricing, margin and profitability

Experience managing change within a sales function

Evidence of improving underperforming teams or territories

Strong forecasting and pipeline discipline

Customer relationships built on trust and long-term value

The ability to influence at board level

A Sales Director must do more than manage salespeople. Senior candidates are far more likely to engage when the recruiter understands their world.

The result is a focused shortlist of Sales Directors who are genuinely aligned with your business, rather than a collection of CVs from people simply looking for their next move.

First-Hand Commercial Experience Matters

JSL Solutions brings more than recruitment experience to Sales Director search.

Our consultants have worked in senior commercial roles within the aftermarket themselves. Commercial Director Recruitment | Automotive & Industrial Aftermarket Specialists

Commercial Director Recruitment

Finding the right Commercial Director for an automotive aftermarket business is one of the most consequential hiring decisions you'll make. This role sits at the intersection of sales, marketing, and business development - and getting it wrong costs far more than a failed search. Our specialist automotive and commercial vehicle aftermarket recruitment expertise means we understand exactly what this hire demands.

Why is a Commercial Director Crucial for Automotive Aftermarket Growth?

How does a Commercial Director influence sales and marketing strategy?

A Commercial Director aligns sales and marketing by creating shared revenue targets, unified messaging, and coordinated go-to-market activity. In the aftermarket, this means ensuring field sales teams, key account managers, and marketing programmes are pulling in the same direction - reducing wasted spend and accelerating pipeline conversion across both trade and retail channels.

What role does a Commercial Director play in business development?

Business development accountability sits firmly with the Commercial Director, who identifies new distribution partnerships, evaluates adjacent product categories, and builds relationships with buying groups and fleet operators. In the automotive aftermarket, where consolidation among distributors is ongoing, this strategic relationship-building directly determines which suppliers gain shelf space and which lose ground.

Why is commercial leadership vital for market share expansion?

Market share in the aftermarket is won through pricing discipline, range authority, and speed of response to demand signals. A strong Commercial Director builds the internal processes and external relationships that allow the business to move faster than competitors - securing new accounts, retaining existing ones, and protecting margin under pressure from both own-label and import competition.

Commercial Director Recruitment: Addressing Hiring Challenges

Most automotive aftermarket businesses find Commercial Director recruitment genuinely difficult. The candidate pool is small, the best people are rarely looking, and a poorly structured search wastes months. Our case studies show how a structured search approach resolves each of these challenges systematically.

What are the common difficulties in finding a Commercial Director?

The primary difficulty is that high-performing Commercial Directors in the aftermarket are almost never actively job-seeking. They are embedded in businesses, managing complex stakeholder relationships, and rarely respond to advertised roles. This means a reactive, job-board-led approach consistently fails to surface the candidates who would actually make the greatest difference to your business.

How do specialist recruiters identify passive Commercial Director candidates?

Specialist recruiters map the market before a search begins - identifying who holds Commercial Director or equivalent roles across target businesses, tracking career progression, and maintaining warm relationships over time. When a brief arrives, the shortlist draws from this existing intelligence rather than starting from scratch, which compresses time-to-hire and improves candidate quality significantly.

What is the typical recruitment process for a Commercial Director role?

The process begins with a detailed role and stakeholder brief, followed by structured market mapping and direct candidate outreach. Candidates are assessed through competency-based evaluation before a shortlist is presented. Our resource on competency-based interviews outlines how this assessment framework identifies genuine strategic capability rather than polished interview performance.

The Benefits of Partnering with a Specialist Recruitment Agency

How can a recruitment agency help find the best Commercial Director for my business?

A specialist agency reduces hiring risk by presenting only candidates whose experience, leadership style, and sector knowledge match your specific brief. Rather than filtering a large volume of applications, the agency conducts the market mapping, outreach, and initial assessment - so your leadership team only invests time in candidates who are genuinely viable for the role.

What value does market insight bring to Commercial Director hiring?

Market insight allows the agency to advise on realistic salary benchmarking, competitor hiring activity, and candidate availability before the search begins. Commercial Director salaries in the UK aftermarket vary considerably by business size, channel complexity, and P&L accountability - and an agency without sector depth will consistently either over-pay or lose candidates to better-informed competitors. Our Building a Commercial Team case study demonstrates how this market intelligence shapes a successful appointment.

How do agencies ensure cultural fit and long-term retention?

Cultural fit assessment goes beyond personality profiling. It requires understanding the leadership culture of the hiring business, the maturity of the commercial function, and the expectations of the board or ownership group. We conduct structured conversations with both parties to surface potential friction points before an offer is made - reducing the risk of an early departure that restarts the entire process.

Key Skills for an Automotive Aftermarket Commercial Director

What key skills should I look for when hiring a Commercial Director for the automotive aftermarket?

Prioritise candidates with demonstrable experience in sales leadership, key account management at distributor or buying group level, and P&L ownership. Strategic planning capability, strong negotiation skills, and the ability to build and motivate commercial teams are non-negotiable. Sector knowledge of aftermarket distribution channels - whether passenger car, commercial vehicle aftermarket, or industrial - significantly accelerates contribution from the outset.

Why is sector-specific experience important for this role?

Sector-specific experience removes the learning curve that costs businesses six to twelve months of underperformance. A Commercial Director who already understands aftermarket pricing dynamics, the role of buying groups, and the relationship between OEM and independent channels can contribute to strategy from the first quarter - rather than spending it learning the market fundamentals.

How do you assess leadership and strategic planning capabilities?

Leadership capability is assessed through structured evidence of team-building, performance management, and cross-functional influence. Strategic planning is evaluated by examining how candidates have identified market opportunities, built business cases, and executed commercial plans against measurable revenue and margin targets - not just whether they can articulate a framework in an interview setting.

How We Conduct Commercial Director Searches

1. Role and Stakeholder Brief
We conduct a structured briefing with the hiring manager and relevant board members to define the commercial challenge the new Director must solve, the leadership culture they will operate within, and the measurable outcomes expected in the first twelve months.

2. Market Mapping
We identify all relevant Commercial Director and senior commercial leadership roles across the target competitive set, building a longlist based on career trajectory, sector relevance, and business context - not just job title matches.

3. Direct Candidate Outreach
We approach candidates directly and confidentially, presenting your opportunity in a way that reflects its genuine strategic significance. This reaches the passive candidates who will never respond to an advertised role.

4. Competency Assessment
We conduct structured interviews assessing commercial acumen, leadership evidence, and sector knowledge before any candidate reaches your process - ensuring your time is spent only on those who meet the full brief.

5. Shortlist Presentation and Support
We present a concise shortlist with detailed candidate profiles, salary expectations, and our assessment rationale. We support your interview process and manage the offer stage to protect against late-stage drop-out.

Looking for Automotive Aftermarket Talent?

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the typical recruitment process for a Commercial Director role?

The typical recruitment process for a Commercial Director involves defining the role, sourcing candidates through executive search and networks, rigorous interviewing and assessment, and comprehensive background checks. Specialist agencies manage these stages, presenting only highly qualified individuals who align with your strategic objectives and company culture.

How can a recruitment agency help find the best Commercial Director for my business?

A recruitment agency helps find the best Commercial Director by using extensive networks, deep market knowledge, and expert assessment techniques. They identify passive candidates, conduct thorough vetting, and present a shortlist of individuals whose experience and leadership style are a strong match for your automotive aftermarket business's specific needs and growth ambitions.

What key skills should I look for when hiring a Commercial Director for the automotive aftermarket?

When hiring a Commercial Director for the automotive aftermarket, look for strong strategic planning, sales leadership, and business development skills. Essential attributes include deep sector knowledge, proven revenue generation, excellent negotiation abilities, and the capacity to build and lead high-performing teams. Cultural fit and adaptability are also crucial for success.

Ready to Start Your Commercial Director Search?

If you're looking to appoint a Commercial Director who will genuinely move the needle on sales, market share, and commercial strategy, we should talk. Looking to recruit a National Sales Manager? JSL Solutions specialises in automotive and industrial aftermarket recruitment, helping manufacturers and distributors secure experienced sales leaders through targeted executive search.

National Sales Manager Recruitment | Automotive & Industrial Aftermarket

National Sales Manager Recruitment

Finding the right National Sales Manager for an aftermarket business is one of the most commercially significant hiring decisions you'll make. This role shapes national revenue performance, drives team capability, and determines how effectively your business captures market share across the UK. Get it wrong, and the cost extends far beyond a vacant desk.

JSL Solutions specialises in automotive and commercial vehicle aftermarket recruitment, connecting aftermarket businesses with National Sales Managers who bring proven strategic leadership, deep sector knowledge, and the commercial acumen to deliver results at a national level.

National Sales Managers are critical for driving nationwide sales performance and market share in the aftermarket sector

Effective recruitment for this role requires assessing strategic leadership, team development, and deep market understanding

Specialist agencies offer access to a wider pool of qualified candidates with proven aftermarket sales leadership experience

Partnering with experts streamlines the hiring process and reduces the risk of a mis-hire for this pivotal position

Why is National Sales Manager Recruitment Critical for Aftermarket Businesses?

National Sales Managers are critical for aftermarket businesses because they develop and execute national sales strategies, lead regional sales teams, and drive market share across an entire country. A mis-hire at this level doesn't just affect one territory - it affects every region, every account, and every sales target your business holds.

What strategic impact does a National Sales Manager have on sales growth?

A National Sales Manager directly determines how a business allocates sales resource, prioritises accounts, and pursues new market opportunities. The role translates board-level commercial objectives into executable national plans, ensuring regional teams operate with consistent direction. Without this strategic alignment, sales activity becomes fragmented and revenue growth stalls despite strong individual performance at regional level.

How do National Sales Managers drive team performance and motivation?

National Sales Managers improve team performance by establishing clear KPIs, coaching regional managers, and creating accountability structures that connect individual activity to national targets. The role acts as the primary link between senior leadership and field sales teams. Candidates who excel in this function combine data-driven performance management with the interpersonal skills to motivate dispersed teams across multiple UK locations.

What market insights do National Sales Managers bring to the aftermarket sector?

Experienced National Sales Managers bring competitor intelligence, channel knowledge, and an understanding of distributor and retailer dynamics specific to the aftermarket. This sector-specific awareness - covering areas such as commercial vehicle parts distribution, private label programmes, and OEM relationships - enables faster identification of growth opportunities and more effective responses to competitive pricing pressure.

Challenges in Hiring a National Sales Manager Independently

Recruiting a National Sales Manager without specialist support consistently produces longer time-to-hire, weaker candidate shortlists, and a higher risk of a costly mis-hire. Our case studies demonstrate how structured search methodology produces materially better outcomes than in-house hiring for senior sales leadership roles.

What are the common pitfalls of in-house National Sales Manager recruitment?

In-house recruitment for National Sales Manager roles frequently relies on active job boards such as Totaljobs or Indeed, which reach only candidates currently seeking a new position. The strongest candidates - those already succeeding in comparable roles - are rarely active on job boards. Reaching this passive candidate pool requires direct approach capability and established sector relationships that most internal HR teams don't hold.

How does a limited talent pool affect National Sales Manager hiring?

The pool of candidates with genuine national aftermarket sales leadership experience is narrow. Candidates who combine strategic planning capability, team leadership at scale, and deep aftermarket sector knowledge represent a small subset of the broader sales management market. Without access to a pre-mapped network of these individuals, hiring managers spend significant time screening unsuitable candidates before identifying qualified ones.

Why is assessing strategic leadership skills difficult without specialist support?

Assessing strategic leadership in a National Sales Manager requires structured competency-based interview frameworks designed specifically for senior commercial roles. Generic interview processes tend to surface candidates who present well rather than those who have genuinely delivered national sales transformation. Specialist recruiters design assessment criteria around the specific commercial challenges your business faces, not generic sales management competencies.

How Specialist Agencies Optimise National Sales Manager Recruitment

JSL Services applies a structured search process to National Sales Manager recruitment that combines active market mapping, direct candidate engagement, and rigorous commercial assessment. Our work across sales roles in the automotive and commercial vehicle aftermarket means we understand the specific leadership profile your business needs.

What unique value does a National Sales Manager recruitment agency offer?

A specialist National Sales Manager recruitment agency provides access to passive candidates who are not visible on general job boards, sector-specific salary benchmarking, and a pre-qualified shortlist rather than a raw application volume. JSL Services also provides market intelligence on candidate availability, competitor hiring activity, and realistic timelines - information that shapes better hiring decisions before the process begins.

How do specialist recruiters identify top National Sales Manager talent?

We identify high-calibre National Sales Manager candidates through direct market mapping of comparable roles across the aftermarket sector, referral networks built over years of specialist placement activity, and structured outreach to candidates who match the specific commercial profile your role demands. Every candidate is assessed against your business's strategic objectives before being presented to you.

What is the process for securing a high-calibre National Sales Manager through an agency?

The process begins with a detailed briefing to establish the commercial context, team structure, and performance expectations for the role. We then conduct targeted market research, approach suitable candidates directly, and carry out structured competency assessments. You receive a focused shortlist of candidates who have been qualified against both technical criteria and cultural fit - not a volume of CVs requiring your own screening time.

Key Qualities to Look for in a National Sales Manager

The strongest National Sales Manager candidates combine strategic commercial thinking with hands-on leadership capability. Understanding which attributes to prioritise - and how to assess them reliably - is where specialist recruitment expertise delivers the greatest value to aftermarket businesses.

What leadership attributes define a successful National Sales Manager?

Successful National Sales Managers demonstrate the ability to build and sustain high-performing regional teams, manage performance constructively, and maintain strategic focus under commercial pressure. They set clear direction, hold teams accountable to national targets, and adapt their leadership approach to the needs of individual regional managers - a skill set that requires both experience and emotional intelligence to execute consistently.

Which commercial skills are essential for National Sales Managers in the aftermarket?

Essential commercial skills include national account management, channel strategy development, pricing and margin management, and the ability to analyse sales data to inform territory planning. In the aftermarket context, candidates should also demonstrate experience managing distributor relationships, understanding of private label and branded product dynamics, and familiarity with the commercial vehicle parts supply chain.

How important is industry-specific experience for a National Sales Manager role?

Industry-specific experience significantly reduces the time a new National Sales Manager requires to become effective. A candidate who already understands aftermarket distribution channels, key account structures, and the competitive environment between OEM and independent parts suppliers can contribute to national sales strategy from day one, rather than spending months building foundational sector knowledge.

How We Approach National Sales Manager Recruitment

Our process is built around precision - not volume. We don't send you a stack of CVs and ask you to do the work. We do the work, and we present you with a shortlist of candidates who are genuinely qualified for the role you need to fill.

1. Role and Market Briefing
We conduct a structured briefing with your hiring team to establish the commercial context, reporting lines, team structure, and performance expectations. This brief informs every stage of the search and ensures we're targeting the right profile from the outset.

2. Market Mapping and Candidate Identification
We map the active candidate market and identify passive candidates currently succeeding in comparable National Sales Manager roles across the aftermarket sector. Our network spans manufacturers, distributors, and service providers in both the automotive and commercial vehicle aftermarket.

3. Direct Approach and Qualification
We approach identified candidates directly, present your opportunity compellingly, and conduct initial qualification conversations to assess commercial fit, leadership experience, and sector knowledge before any candidate reaches your shortlist.

4. Competency Assessment
We assess shortlisted candidates against the specific competencies your role demands - strategic planning, team leadership, national account management, and aftermarket sector expertise - using structured frameworks designed for senior commercial appointments.

5. Shortlist Presentation and Hiring Support
We present a focused shortlist with detailed candidate profiles, our assessment rationale, and current market salary data. We support the interview process, manage candidate communication, and assist with offer negotiation to protect your preferred candidate through to acceptance.

Looking for Automotive Aftermarket Talent?

JSL Solutions works with businesses just like yours across the Automotive Aftermarket sector. The role also involves analysing market trends and competitor activity to identify new opportunities for growth and market share expansion.

How can a recruitment agency help find a National Sales Manager for my business?

A specialist recruitment agency helps by accessing passive candidates through established networks, conducting thorough vetting processes, and providing current market insights. The agency streamlines your hiring process, presents only highly qualified individuals, and ensures strong cultural and strategic fit for your aftermarket business's specific objectives - reducing time-to-hire and mis-hire risk.

What salary expectations should I have for a National Sales Manager in the UK automotive aftermarket?

Salary expectations for a National Sales Manager in the UK automotive aftermarket vary based on experience, company size, and responsibilities. A competitive package typically includes a strong base salary, performance-related bonuses, and benefits. Consulting a specialist recruiter provides current market benchmarks specific to your sector and candidate profile.

What qualities should I prioritise when hiring a National Sales Manager?

Prioritise strong strategic planning ability, proven leadership and team development skills, and deep commercial acumen. Recruiting a Business Unit Director? JSL Solutions identifies senior leaders with proven P&L, strategic and commercial experience across the automotive aftermarket.

Business Unit Director Recruitment

Business Unit Director Recruitment

Finding a Business Unit Director who combines genuine P&L ownership, strategic leadership and deep aftermarket knowledge is one of the most important leadership appointments a business can make.

The right person can transform the performance of a division, strengthen its commercial direction, develop the leadership team and identify new opportunities for profitable growth. The wrong appointment can have consequences across sales, operations, customer relationships and profitability.

At JSL Solutions, we specialise in senior commercial and leadership recruitment for manufacturers, distributors and service providers across the automotive, commercial vehicle and industrial aftermarket.

Our experience enables us to identify Business Unit Directors who don't simply have the right job title, but can demonstrate genuine ownership of commercial performance, people, strategy and results.

Whether you're replacing an established leader, restructuring a division, planning succession or creating a new business unit, we help you identify leaders capable of taking genuine ownership of the operation.

Why Businesses Choose JSL Solutions

We specialise in senior commercial and leadership recruitment across the automotive and industrial aftermarket.

We identify passive senior leaders who are unlikely to respond to conventional recruitment advertising.

We assess genuine P&L ownership rather than simply exposure to financial reporting.

We evaluate strategic leadership, commercial performance, operational capability and people development.

We provide market intelligence around candidate availability, remuneration and realistic recruitment timescales.

Our search methodology is built around your business objectives rather than simply matching CVs to a job description.

Why Specialist Business Unit Director Recruitment Matters

Appointing a Business Unit Director isn't a standard senior hire.

The position often sits at the intersection of commercial strategy, operations, product, sales, finance and people leadership.

Within the automotive and commercial vehicle aftermarket, that complexity increases further.

Business Unit Directors may need to understand distributor relationships, technical product portfolios, international supply chains, pricing pressures, changing vehicle technology and increasingly complex routes to market.

A strong general manager from another industry may therefore not automatically be the right Business Unit Director for an aftermarket organisation.

Sector understanding matters.

What Challenges Do Business Unit Directors Face in the Automotive Aftermarket?

Business Unit Directors frequently operate in businesses undergoing significant change.

Typical challenges include:

Protecting profitability during periods of cost pressure

Growing revenue without sacrificing margin

Developing new markets

Strengthening distributor and customer relationships

Improving operational performance

Managing complex product portfolios

Developing leadership capability

Responding to competitor activity

Managing organisational change

Aligning sales, operations, product and marketing

Adapting to changing vehicle technology

Building sustainable long-term growth

The strongest leaders can move comfortably between strategy and execution.

They understand the numbers, but they also understand the people and commercial decisions behind them.

How Does P&L Responsibility Affect Business Unit Director Selection?

Genuine P&L ownership is one of the most important areas we assess.

There is a significant difference between someone who has reviewed a P&L as part of a management team and someone who has personally been accountable for delivering it.

We explore:

Revenue responsibility

Gross margin

Operating profit

Cost control

Budgeting

Forecasting

Pricing decisions

Investment decisions

Headcount

Working capital

Business planning

Candidates should be able to explain the commercial decisions they made and how those decisions affected business performance.

The size of the P&L matters, but so does the complexity of the environment in which those results were achieved.

What Strategic Leadership Qualities Are Essential?

Successful Business Unit Directors combine strategic thinking with the ability to turn strategy into action.

We look for evidence that candidates have previously:

Defined commercial strategy

Built and developed leadership teams

Improved profitability

Entered new markets

Strengthened customer relationships

Developed new revenue streams

Managed organisational change

Improved operational performance

Made difficult commercial decisions

Created accountability throughout a business

The strongest candidates don't simply talk about strategy.

They can explain what they changed, why they changed it and what happened as a result.

How JSL Solutions Identifies Business Unit Director Talent

Our executive search methodology is built around the specific requirements of each appointment.

We don't start with a database.

We start with your business.

Before approaching candidates, we establish the commercial challenge behind the vacancy, the leadership capability required and what success should look like after the successful person has joined.

1. Detailed Leadership Brief

We work with your leadership team to understand:

Business unit size

Revenue and profitability

P&L responsibility

Team structure

Product portfolio

Customer base

Geographic responsibility

Growth objectives

Operational challenges

Leadership culture

Reason for recruitment

Longer-term succession plans

This gives us a far clearer picture of the leader required than a conventional job description alone.

2. Market Mapping

We then map relevant leaders across the target market.

This may include:

Existing Business Unit Directors

Managing Directors

General Managers

Commercial Directors

Sales Directors

Country Managers

Senior functional leaders ready for broader responsibility

Importantly, this search includes individuals who are not actively looking for another position.

At senior leadership level, many of the strongest candidates are already performing successfully and require a compelling reason to consider moving.

3. Confidential Direct Approach

Potential candidates are approached individually and confidentially.

Rather than simply sending a job description, we explain the business, the opportunity, the commercial challenge and why we believe the position could be relevant to their career.

This is particularly important at Business Unit Director level, where candidates are assessing the organisation just as carefully as the organisation is assessing them.

4. Competency Assessment

Every shortlisted candidate completes a structured assessment covering areas including:

P&L ownership

Strategic leadership

Commercial growth

Operational management

People leadership

Customer relationships

Change management

Decision making

Market development

Cultural fit

We look for evidence and outcomes rather than relying solely on responsibilities listed on a CV.

5. Commercial Validation

We explore the scale and complexity of each candidate's previous responsibility.

A candidate may claim P&L ownership, for example, but the reality could range from managing a small sales budget to having complete responsibility for a multi-million-pound business unit.

Understanding that distinction is essential.

6. Focused Shortlist

Our clients receive a focused shortlist rather than a volume of CVs.

Alongside each candidate's career history, we explain:

Why we believe they fit the brief

Relevant sector experience

Commercial achievements

P&L responsibility

Leadership capability

Potential areas to explore at interview

Career motivation

Remuneration expectations

Notice period

This gives your leadership team considerably more context before the first interview takes place.

Assessing Leadership Style and Cultural Fit

Technical capability alone doesn't determine whether a Business Unit Director succeeds.

Leadership style matters enormously.

A highly entrepreneurial leader may thrive within an owner-managed growth business but struggle inside a highly structured multinational organisation.

Equally, someone accustomed to significant corporate infrastructure may find a smaller business requiring greater personal involvement challenging.

We therefore explore:

Decision-making style

Communication

Autonomy

Accountability

Pace of working

Team development

Approach to change

Stakeholder management

Leadership under pressure

Our objective isn't to find a universally "good" culture fit.

It's to identify the leadership style most likely to succeed within your organisation.

The Value of Specialist Business Unit Director Recruitment

At this level, recruitment isn't simply about filling an empty position.

The appointment can influence the performance and direction of an entire business unit for years.

A specialist search partner provides access to a wider leadership market whilst also helping your organisation assess candidates more thoroughly.

Access to Passive Leadership Talent

Many successful Business Unit Directors aren't actively searching for another role.

They're delivering results, leading teams and progressing within their existing organisations.

They may nevertheless consider moving for the right opportunity.

Typical motivations include:

Greater P&L responsibility

Increased autonomy

Equity or long-term incentives

Broader leadership responsibility

International exposure

Succession opportunities

A stronger growth story

Better cultural alignment

Direct search allows us to engage this part of the market rather than limiting your choice to leaders actively applying for vacancies.

Better Market Intelligence

Executive search also provides valuable insight before an appointment is made.

Throughout a search we can advise on:

Candidate availability

Current remuneration expectations

Competitor structures

Candidate motivations

Market perception of the opportunity

Realistic recruitment timescales

This allows businesses to adjust their approach where necessary before losing strong candidates.

Business Unit Director Salary and Package Considerations

There is no single standard salary for a Business Unit Director.

Remuneration varies significantly depending upon:

P&L size

Team responsibility

Geographic scope

International responsibility

Business complexity

Sector

Growth expectations

Equity or long-term incentives

Packages frequently combine basic salary with:

Annual bonus

Company car or car allowance

Pension

Private healthcare

Life assurance

Long-term incentive plans

Equity or share options in some businesses

For senior appointments, the complete proposition matters more than basic salary alone.

Candidates will also evaluate the leadership team, strategy, financial stability, autonomy and long-term opportunity.

Looking to Recruit a Business Unit Director?

If you're appointing a Business Unit Director, you're making a decision that can influence the commercial direction of your organisation for years.

JSL Solutions works with manufacturers, distributors and service providers across the automotive, commercial vehicle and industrial aftermarket to identify senior leaders capable of delivering sustainable growth.

Whether you're planning succession, replacing an existing leader, restructuring a division or building a new business unit, we'd be pleased to discuss the market and the leadership profile you require.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a Business Unit Director do?

A Business Unit Director typically takes overall responsibility for the commercial and operational performance of a defined division or business unit.

Responsibilities may include P&L ownership, strategic planning, sales, operations, people leadership, budgeting, customer relationships and delivering agreed growth and profitability objectives.

The precise scope varies significantly between organisations.

What is the difference between a Business Unit Director and a General Manager?

The titles are sometimes interchangeable.

However, Business Unit Director positions frequently involve responsibility for a defined division within a larger organisation, while a General Manager may have responsibility for an entire operation or legal entity.

The important consideration isn't the title but the actual scope of P&L, leadership and decision-making responsibility.

What should I look for when recruiting a Business Unit Director?

Look for evidence of genuine P&L accountability, strategic leadership, commercial growth, operational understanding and people development.

Candidates should be able to explain specific decisions they have made, why they made them and the measurable impact those decisions had.

Relevant sector knowledge can also be particularly valuable within specialist markets such as the automotive and commercial vehicle aftermarket.

Is automotive aftermarket experience essential?

It depends on the role.

For positions requiring detailed knowledge of aftermarket distribution, technical products or established customer relationships, direct sector experience can be extremely valuable.

For other appointments, candidates from adjacent industrial sectors may bring relevant leadership and commercial experience.

The decision should be based on the actual requirements of the business rather than applying a blanket rule.

How do you assess P&L experience?

We explore the candidate's direct accountability for revenue, margin, operating profit, budgets, costs and investment decisions.

We also examine the scale and complexity of the business they managed and ask candidates to provide examples of decisions that improved or protected financial performance.

This helps distinguish genuine P&L ownership from general exposure to financial reporting.

How long does Business Unit Director recruitment take?

Timescales depend on the complexity of the brief, candidate availability and the interview process.

A senior direct-search assignment commonly requires several weeks to map, approach and assess the market before a final appointment is made.

Notice periods for senior leaders can also be three to six months, so succession planning is particularly valuable for Business Unit Director appointments.

Why use executive search rather than advertise the vacancy?

Advertising primarily reaches people who are actively considering a move.

Executive search allows you to consider the wider market, including successful leaders who aren't currently applying for vacancies but may be open to the right opportunity.

For commercially critical leadership positions, this significantly broadens the available candidate pool.

Can JSL Solutions recruit confidentially?

Yes.

Senior leadership appointments frequently require discretion, particularly where an incumbent remains in position or a business is planning organisational change.

We can conduct confidential market mapping and direct approaches without publicly advertising the vacancy.

Ready to Appoint Your Next Business Unit Director?

If you're looking for a leader capable of taking genuine ownership of P&L performance, strategy, people and growth, JSL Solutions can help.

We combine specialist aftermarket knowledge with structured executive search to identify leaders who may never appear through conventional recruitment channels.

Contact JSL Solutions for a confidential discussion about your Business Unit Director requirement and the current leadership market.

About the Author

Stewart Lupton is Managing Director of JSL Solutions and has spent more
